For the last 3 years, the Neighboring Movement has hosted an AmeriCorps Vista working within our organization. Vista is actually an acronym for Volunteers In Service To America. This is a federal program that provides a small financial incentive for people wanting to do be of service.

If you are not familiar with the AmeriCorps Vista program here is a quick overview. It is a one-year term, which can be renewed up to 3 years, and considered a poverty immersion. Participants work as a full-time employees and make about $1,000/month. AmeriCorps also provides a health care plan for the participants. After their year is complete, they get an education stipend of $5,645 which can be used on student debt or tuition. If they don't want the education stipend they get $1,500 in cash at the end of the term. The Neighboring Movement also contributes $400 a month if the participant is willing to live in our neighborhood.

Our current Vista, Sydney, will end her term in April and we are starting the search for her replacement. The Vista will help us train and organize volunteers within the SoCe Neighborhood here in Wichita. In particular, they will work with high school students on our neighborhood listening team to meet neighbors, make connections, and host neighborhood gatherings.
