Sharing at the Neighborhood Association

On Monday evening, I made a brief presentation to our neighborhood association about Asset-Based Community Development (ABCD). In the coming weeks I will post in more depth the ideas involved in ABCD, but for today I want to explain that ABCD is about honoring and working with the gifts, abilities, resources and assets that are already present in a community, such as a neighborhood.

These assets can be described in 6 categories:

  1. Individuals' Gifts and Skills
  2. Voluntary Associations of People
  3. Institutions
  4. Physical Assets
  5. Local Economic Exchange
  6. The Story of the Community

It was great to share at the neighborhood association meeting. There was good discussion both during and after my presentation. And the people I talked to after the meeting genuinely care about our neighborhood and their neighbors.
