Christmas Thought 2016

One of my favorite Christmas hymns is “O Holy Night.” It is the pinnacle of the first verse that hits me every time:

O holy night! The stars are brightly shining,
It is the night of our dear Saviour’s birth.
Long lay the world in sin and error pining,
Till He appear’d and the soul felt its worth.

“Till He appear’d and the soul felt its worth.” What a beautiful insight into the meaning of Christmas. Christmas is an expression of God’s love, God’s desire for relationship, and the true value of each one of us. It is a truth which resonates with the insight of Jean Vanier, who writes,

To love someone is not first of all to do things for them, but to reveal to them their beauty and value, to say to them through our attitude: ‘You are beautiful. You are important. I trust you. You can trust yourself.’ ...To love someone is to reveal to them their capacities for life, the light that is shining in them.

The belief of SoCe Life is that everyone has great capacities for life, everyone has light that is shining in them, every soul has worth. In this Christmas season, may your soul feel its worth!
