In Peter Block's book, "Community: the structures of belonging"  I found his section on gifts to be quite inspiring. Here is a passage from this section:

"Judith Snow, a powerful voice in the so-called disabilities world, declares that the purpose of her life is to eliminate the language of disabilities from our vocabulary. She stated in an e-mail to me, 'My deepest desire is to make the world safe for people whose abilities and contributions are generally unrecognized.' She creates a world where no one is known, is labeled, or takes their identity from their disabilities, only from their gifts. This is in no way a denial of our limitations, just a recognition that they are not who we are. I am not what I am not able to do. I am what I am able to do--my gifts and capacities."  (pp.139-40)
