52 Weeks of Neighboring - 5/21

Tip of the Week – Have a spring block party.

Here’s the first thing to know about hosting a spring block party: It’s not as hard as you think it’s going to be. You may think a gathering like this takes a lot of work and planning, but it doesn’t have to. There are only 3 rules for hosting a block party: 1. Keep it simple. 2. Keep it simple. 3. (say it with me) Keep it simple. Both you and your neighbors have the freedom to enjoy your get-together if it’s stress free. Here’s a few ways to keep it simple:

  • Host your block party outside. Take advantage of the nice weather and use your block party to get some fresh air. Having your block party outside makes your gathering more inviting to your neighbors, it’s easier for them to come and go, and it gives your guests room to play games or strike up an easy conversation. Hosting your block party outside also means you don’t have to clean your house!
  • Break out the grill! If you don’t have a grill, find a neighbor that does and ask for their help. Cooking on a grill allows you to cook outside and it makes food preparation easier. Let your neighbors know you’ll have a grill ready and they are welcome to bring food they would like to grill or a side dish to supplement.
  • Don’t reinvent the wheel. If you have a neighbor who is already great at throwing parties, reach out to them and see if they would be willing to co-host a block party. You know the old proverb, ‘it takes a village to raise a neighborhood.’

Make sure to deliver a note to all your neighbors to invite them to your block party. We’ve made this part really easy for you. You can download a template here and customize it for your block party.

If you haven’t made many connections on your block, have no fear – you can still host a block party! Hosting a block party isn’t just for the experienced neighbor. It’s actually a really simple and natural way to meet people. It’s also a kid-friendly activity so families feel welcome to join in the fun.

To our SoCe Life friends in apartment complexes (or even dorms): We have not forgotten about you! If your apartment doesn’t allow for a block party outside, throw one in the hallway! Check out this awesome video for some inspiration.

Happy neighboring!
